Province of the Sacred Heart
from Fr. John Eaton, O.F.M.
The Franciscan friars of Sacred Heart Province have long been involved with ministry to the sick and suffering. At the end of the 19th century, several friars lost their lives while faithfully ministering to victims of the yellow fever epidemics that swept through Memphis. In 1985, the Franciscans moved into New Orleans to initiate a ministry to persons with HIV/AIDS—at a time when few others had the courage or compassion to undertake such a ministry. Friars have served as chaplains at many hospitals and, in parishes, have provided the comfort of the Anointing of the Sick and Viaticum.
On February 11, the Catholic Church will celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, commemorating the appearances in 1858 of Our Lady to Bernadette Soubirous. Because of the healings that have taken place at Lourdes over the years, the Church also marks February 11 as World Day of the Sick.
As we prepare to celebrate the World Day of the Sick, we invite you to send us the names of one or two people whom you know to be in special need of prayer. The best way to get the names to us is by using e-mail: email@example.com. Please put “Prayer Request” in the subject line. If you do not use e-mail, please use the enclosed prayer intention form. We will be praying for our sick donors and their loved ones on February 11.
By your financial donation you can assist the friars of Sacred Heart Province as they continue to minister to the sick and infirm. Please help us in this work of healing. Also, I ask for your prayers. Like any family, the brotherhood of Franciscans is not exempt from age or illness. Many of our friars have become sick and infirm in their later years. Please pray for them as they are praying for you. Thank you.
Peace and every good,
Fr. John Eaton, OFM
